La police politique sous Lénine et Staline " dans notre maison d'édition, l'auteur présente non plus le Goulag lui-même, mais la police politique soviétique, les différents services de la Sécurité d'Etat, les fameux " organes " de sinistre réputation, quelle que soit leur dénomination au fil des années de pouvoir communiste : Tchéka, Guépéou, OGPOu, NKVD, NKGB, MVD, MGB et KGB) et leurs ramifications à travers l'URSS.
Mais aussi les différentes institutions placées sous leur tutelle et chargées d'élaborer la doctrine ou de mettre en oeuvre l'action de cette police politique et d'appliquer ses directives : Conférence spéciale, troïkas extra-judiciaires, etc. Les hommes qui permirent à l'appareil répressif d'atteindre son rendement maximum, et notamment ceux qui alimentèrent et firent fonctionner les prisons et les camps, sont donc au coeur de cet ouvrage.
Ce livre présente aussi les uniformes, marques de grade et insignes distinctifs des fonctionnaires des " organes ". Ces insignes, très rares et longtemps cachés, sont des symboles d'appartenance portés en général sur l'uniforme ou, plus rarement, sur la tenue civile des officiers, sous-officiers et soldats des administrations centrales et locales des organes de sécurité et des troupes ou unités spéciales qui en dépendent.
Le regard de l'auteur est porté principalement sur l'appareil répressif lui-même, sur les rouages du " hachoir humain " et les " tchékistes ", - un terme générique employé jusqu'à nos jours pour désigner les auteurs de cet holocauste -, organisateurs et agents d'exécution.

Tres fueron los hombres que se enfrentaron al embrujo de las sirenas, esas extrañas aves que atraían irremediablemente a los marineros con su canto: Ulises, que tomó la precaución de hacerse atar de pies y manos al mástil de su navío, escuchó y sobrevivió; Orfeo, que en la expedición de los Argonautas vislumbró el mortal peligro de su música y lo neutralizó con las notas de su cítara; y Butes, navegante y compañero del anterior en la misma aventura, que sucumbió al hechizo y se arrojó de la nave. Quignard rescata el acto de este personaje marginal de la mitología griega, «un olvidado del recuerdo del mundo», sin pretender jamás descifrarlo. Lo utiliza como paradigma de la «renuncia a la sociedad de los que hablan». Mientras que Ulises se las arregla para no renunciar a nada —consigue escuchar a las sirenas y también regresar a casa—, Butes accede al gran silencio mediante una música animal, que se opone a la bella mesura de la música órfica. En la misma línea de Michelstaedter, Quignard plantea la dicotomía de elegir entre el salvaje nihilismo del instante o la cómoda muerte por anquilosamiento a manos de las formas sociales. En estos tiempos en los que hasta la propia disidencia está definida como parte de la renovación del sistema, existen por fortuna, a manera de respiro, algunos antiguos contemporáneos como Quignard, uno de los pocos «escritores más silenciosos que los demás, en páginas más mudas todavía».

Dans ce récit particulièrement précis et circonstancié, on assiste chronologiquement, en dix-neuf actes, à la mise à mort sociale méthodique d'un OPJ (Officier de Police Judiciaire), patriote au-dessus de tout soupçon et professionnellement irréprochable. La seule " faute " de ce policier, dénoncé par une collègue musulmane : avoir critiqué, sur un réseau social privé, les assassins islamistes de nos compatriotes.
Rien d'autre. Ces pages se lisent comme un roman policier, jusqu'au dernier acte à peine croyable, à la lecture duquel on apprend qu'un choix dramatique s'impose à la raison...
